In honour of National Women’s Month, Eveready would like to raise awareness of five local charities dedicated to empowering women across South Africa. Women are one of the strongest yet most vulnerable members of society, and it’s encouraging to see so many organisations committed to making a difference in their lives. If women empowerment matters to you too, please take a moment to support these worthy causes this Women’s Month.
1. 18twenty8
18twenty8 is a 100% women-led Non-Profit Organisation that empowers young women by providing strategies for their educational and personal development. Their initiatives include facilitating life-skills workshops for schoolgirls in marginalised communities and providing financial assistance and mentorship for undergraduate female students. Their workshops have a strong focus on female development, covering topics such as personal hygiene, goal setting, CV writing and much more.
Visit 18twenty8.org to find out more about how you can get involved.
2. Project Dignity
Project Dignity is on a mission to empower disadvantaged young women to complete their education with dignity. In South Africa, there are a large number of girls that miss out on their schooling or drop out completely because of a lack of access to sanitary wear. Project Dignity, therefore, distributes re-usable sanitary pads to South African girls between the ages of 10-19, to help keep them in schools and reach their full potential.
This Women’s Month, Eveready is running a fundraising campaign for Project Dignity on our Facebook page. Please show your support by participating in our #EvereadyxProjectDignitycampaign, and visit projectdignity.org.za for more information on this great cause.
3. Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children
The Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children (SBCWC) is a one-stop centre for women and children who are survivors of abuse. They provide a wide range of services, including a 24-hour emergency shelter, short and medium-term residential care, counseling and mental health support, legal advice and much more. Named after Saartjie (Sarah) Baartman, a young Khoikhoi woman who was taken to England and exploited for display purposes, the SBCWC’s vision is to create a safe and secure society where women and children are empowered to exercise their full rights.

More specifically, the organisation offers counseling, support, and intervention in relation to societal concerns such as women and children abuse, orphaned and abandoned children, as well as those living with HIV/AIDS or other terminal illnesses. Founded by former Miss South Africa Cindy Nell-Roberts, Women4Women is a foundation which focuses on the empowerment and upliftment of women. One of the core functions of Women4Women is to raise funds for less fortunate and previously disadvantaged women who cannot afford to pay for their education. The foundation also facilitates self-improvement and skills-development workshops and lends a helping hand to other female-focused charities across the country. Their ultimate goal is to help women improve their earnings, living conditions, confidence, and to help them secure a better future for their children.
